Advocate Through Art
The Advocate Through Art program is designed to create awareness about domestic violence. Domestic violence survivors utilize art, craft, and design as tools to exercise their voice and find their agency. Volunteers work with survivors and their children to create public artworks that educate viewers about the myriad of issues and warning signs connected with abusive relationships. By telling their stories, people who have been victimized have the power to break the cycle of violence by creating awareness and instigating action.
The Jewelry Project is a skill-based workshop in which volunteers and shelter residents work together to make jewelry, which is sold on an ongoing basis. 100% of the proceeds support the Advocate Through Art program, and when clients choose to donate their crafts, they receive a jewelry supply kit in exchange. In this way the project promotes craft making as a way to supplement income, release stress, and build community. For updates about the project or to purchase jewelry, click here.
The Advocate Through Art program was founded in 2008, and is funded by the Maryland Institute College Of Art's Community Art Corps/Americorps program.
