Statistics & Information

Information is the key to educating people and changing attitudes that encourage people to believe that abusive behaviors are okay or that the problem doesn't exist. It's not, and it does!

Did you know...?

  • Nearly 5.3 million incidents of intimate partner violence occur each year among U.S. women ages 18 and older. Most assaults consist of pushing, grabbing, shoving, slapping, and hitting (Tjaden and Thoennes 2000a).
  • In the United States every year, about 1.5 million women are raped or physically assaulted by an intimate partner. This translates into about 47 domestic violence assaults per 1,000 women (Tjaden and Thoennes 2000a).
  • Intimate partner violence results in nearly 2 million injuries and 1,300 deaths nationwide every year (CDC 2003).

It Starts Early

  • 1 in 3 teenagers report knowing a friend or peer who has been hit, punched, kicked, slapped, choked or physically hurt by their partner.
  • 98% of teenage girls who have been abused continue to date the abuser.
